Had a pretty good job interview yesterday but after a good one it really reminded me of the last bad one I had. I have done many interviews in the past. Both functioning as the interviewer and the interviewee. I have had a GREAT Human Resource leader at my last job that taught me many things about the whole interview process and how to keep it professional and get the information you need from the candidates. That does not mean I will know the questions but i know how things should run and how long things should take.
In October of 2009 I was head hunted by two of their city store managers for Lu Lu Lemon. I was pretty excited because I really like the product and love the care, focus, and vision of the brand and company and they were looking for leadership persons. After a quick, fun, informal meeting (playing with the dogs at the dog park YA), they decided to tell the District Manager about me and have me part of their team (or so i was lead to believe anyway).
After three weeks i got a call from her to book an interview and have a little chat about job stuff. I meet her at the store to have a chat. We ended up leaving the store and just finding some chairs in the mall to sit and talk.
Mistake #1 she was the only interviewer. Always have two.
We chatted for 45 mins or so and it was all over the place. I really hope she had a plan but was not sure. Maybe that is how Lu Lu does their interviews and selection process and that best serves them, but it was crazy. We finished the interview and she said she would let me know in a week either way. She had to go to Vancouver or something so i would not be sooner then that.
A week passes and NOTHING...two weeks pass and NOTHING...so i e mailed her Blackberry saying I was still interested in the position and drawing on how my experiences in the last posion would lend nicely to the new one at Lu Lu. A Third week comes and goes...so I called her this time just say again that I was still interested. It was not until the fourth week that I heard from her.
Mistake #2 not only did she not call me back when she said she was going to it took her and additional 3 week. Very disrespectful, and lacked ingratiate. (This was especially ironic after she told me how Lu Lu Lemon was about ingratiate, and held it to the highest standard.)
Mistake #3 not returning calls or e mails in a timely fashion. It took an addtional two week before i received a response from the e mail and a full week from the voice mail. She has a Blackberry so there was really no excuses not respond no mater where she was IN THE WOLD.
Four week comes and I was working out and got back to my home and checked my voice mail and she had FINALLY called me back. Left a very long voice mail with excuse after pitiful excuse as to why she had been unable to call me back. She was really not living up to the integrity she preached to me. Then still on the voice mail says that I did not get the job.
Mistake #5 saying i did not get the job on VOICE MAIL. Me not getting the job was not the issue. If she did not see me as a fit who better to know that then the DM of the region. NEVER leave that on voice mail. Whether its an offer or not NEVER leave it on voice mail.
What was especially ironic is the for the first 10 mins of the interview she told me how Lu Lu Lemon in our city was short of Leadership people. They usually try and succession plan their people up but there was no one that they identified as potential new leaders. That is why i was head hunted to be placed in a leadership role. The reason why I was not hired was because I was not an internal candidate. ?????? Contridicions??? WTF was she on? Well probably better that way.
Unfortunately after that experience Lu Lu Lemon is now just a product to me. The interactions with the company has left a very bad taste in my mouth. It is unfortunate that one person can do that for a whole organization. I hope that someday i will be shown that the company really does care and do what it says so that my faith can be restored.
They don't really live up to any of their "views". Great stuff... but all the care for is the $$$$$$$ not promoting wellbeing.
